Suspended Book on Vietnamese Slang Released on Amazon

After being withdrawn from local bookstores last month for its alleged racy content and possibly offensive language, a comedic picture book depicting local youth slang is having its e-version released internationally.

Under a publishing transfer between Vietnam-based Nha Nam and Fine Arts Publishing Houses and California-based Indochine Media Inc, the ebook of Sat thu dau mung mu (Killer with a soft head) is being sold on Amazon for US$7.99.

In an interview with VTC News on Nov 8, Vu Hoang Giang, vice director of Nha Nam, said that the book’s publishing in the overseas market was planned and signed with the foreign partner before it was officially released in Vietnam. As a result, it is not illegal to release the book abroad.

Barbara Grier Dies at 78; Co-founder of Lesbian Publishing House

Barbara Grier, a pathbreaking publisher who challenged mainstream prejudices to make literature by and about lesbians widely available in the United States and abroad, has died. She was 78.

Grier, a founder of Naiad Press, died of lung cancer Thursday in Tallahassee, Fla., said her longtime partner, Donna McBride.

Grier and McBride launched Naiad Press in 1973 with a $2,000 loan and built it into a $1-million business. By the time it folded in 2003, it had published more than 500 titles by authors such as Rita Mae Brown, Katherine V. Forrest, Jane Rule and Sheila Ortiz Taylor.

Deal Brings Largest Religion Book Publishers Under One Corporate Umbrella

By Dan Merica, CNN (CNN) - Publisher HarperCollins reached an agreement Monday to buy fellow publisher Thomas Nelson, a move that will bring the two largest religion book publishers in the country under one corporation.

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann will publish a campaign autobiography titled “Core of Conviction” later this month, her campaign announced this morning.

2011 Self-Publishing Book Expo Sees More E-books, More Attendance

The third annual Self-Publishing Book Expo was held at the Sheraton in New York City on October 22, bringing together authors and publishers with an eye toward self-publishing titles. Illustrating the still-changing world of self-publishing, co-founder of the Self-Publishing Book Expo Karen Mender said “The interesting thing this year is we have a few more e-book publishers,” naming BookBaby, BookBrewer and PubIt! as companies with tables in the exhibition hall.

POLITICO, Random House Launch Online Bookstore

POLITICO has taken its second step into the book business today with the launch of an online bookstore, in partnership with Random House, of political books curated by POLITICO’s editors.

“POLITICO Bookshelf” will be operated by Random House featuring books on current events, politics, history and biography. A quick gander through its debut arrangement shows books ranging from Herman Cain’s campaign autobiography to Matt Taibbi’s “Griftopia.”

It also features a prominent opportunity to pre-order POLITICO’s first step into book publishing: the e-book “Playbook 2012: The Right Fights Back,” by Mike Allen and Evan Thomas and edited by Random House's Jon Meacham, due out Nov. 30 on Random House Publishing Group.

Frankfurt Book Fair: Beyond the Hype

Almost as big as Oktoberfest, the Frankfurt Book Fair, which opened here Wednesday and continues through Sunday, is the World Series of publishing. Somewhere between blockbusters like the "Godfather" prequel "The Family Corleone," penned by a stand-in for the late Mario Puzo, and Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs biography are many lesser known titles.

Sandwiched between the big international bestsellers are books that deserve a second look by estimable publishers or small presses without big marketing budgets. So You Want to Be a Publisher

I’m a member of the Internet Press Guild, a group of very seasoned technology journalists. We discuss a lot about the business of media and writing in our little private enclave. There’s often a lot of career discussion, especially since most of us got our start writing way before “Internet” or “blogging” were words anyone used.

Today, one of our very seasoned writers asked about making that transition from author to publisher. Now, I’ve been a publisher of one sort or another since the 1980s and until my recent forays into government policy, the only job title I ever put on forms was “publisher”.

The point is, I have some experience with this subject. If you combine the fact that I’m a programmer with the fact that I’m a publisher, you begin to understand why I have such a flowery command of profanity.

I write children's books, essays and articles.

Describe your work: I have written four children's picture books (I did not illustrate them), "Sam: The Tale of a Chesapeake Bay Rockfish" (Tidewater Publishers, 1997) has been in print for more than 13 years. My new books -- "The Fish Tank" (Schiffer Publishing 2011), "The Turtle Tank" (Schiffer Publishing 2011) and "The Rat Tank" (Schiffer Publishing 2011) --are all written in haiku and are very fun to read. I have written essays and articles about life on the Eastern Shore that have been published in the Washington Post and First Person essays for The Washingtonian magazine.

First time Author Optimistic About New Era of Publishing

Book Publisher Offers Some Advice for Authors

In my role as publisher, first at Macmillan of Canada, then at McClelland & Stewart (a period spanning almost precisely 25 years), I used to supply this document — headed “awful warnings” — to new authors.

I was pleased to note the initial reaction was invariably an amused one. About six months later, however, a much more thoughtful letter tended to follow. I should stress that the conditions described here are not restricted to Canada. These warnings were picked up and republished in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. I like to think the rest of the world is free of the imperfections mentioned here.

Another Steve Jobs Book Aims To Accelerate Publication By One Month

A book consisting entirely of quotes from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is being sped to market as much as a month ahead of schedule to meet demand following Jobs’ Oct. 5 passing. The accelerated schedule mirrors that of other, higher-profile Jobs books also in the works, such as Jobs’ official biography by journalist Walter Isaacson. Publisher Simon & Schuster has said that Isaacson’s much-anticipated book, Steve Jobs: A Biography, will now be published on Oct. 24, up from Nov. 21.

Steve Jobs Book to Share His Memorable Quotes

A new book revealing many of Steve Jobs' most illuminating quotes is being rushed to the market following the passing of the Apple leader on Wednesday.

Initially slated to be published next March and then pushed to November 15 following Jobs' resignation as Apple CEO, "I, Steve: Steve Jobs in His Own Words," is being shipped to retail stores early next week and should be available to consumers by the end of the month.

The book has already been available for pre-order at Amazon and has naturally seen a surge in interest since Jobs' death earlier this week.

What Happens to Books When the Kindle is Free ?

Amazon’s recent announcement of the Kindle Fire — its color tablet that may or may not become a competitor to the Apple iPad — was what got the most attention last week, but the online retailer also made some other announcements at the same time, including a drop in price for the original Kindle to $79. Based on the consistent and gradual declines in Kindle prices, some have speculated that Amazon could soon offer them for free, sponsored by advertising or other similar deals. Which raises an interesting question: What would free e-book readers do to the book industry?

Steve Jobs Biography Release Date Is Moved Up to Oct. 24

Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- CBS Corp.'s Simon & Schuster book- publishing unit moved up the release date of the biography of Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs, who died yesterday.

The authorized biography by Walter Isaacson, titled "Steve Jobs," will be released on Oct. 24, according to Adam Rothberg, a spokesman for Simon & Schuster. The publisher first intended to publish the book in February, later moved it up to late November and then decided on October after the iconic entrepreneur passed away yesterday.
